The Epidemiology Unit (EU)
Funded institutes
arc's Epidemiology Unit has an international reputation for the diversity and excellence of its work. The unit, known as the EU, is funded by a core grant of £1.4 million each year: about nine per cent of the arc's total research expenditure.
Based at the University in Manchester, the major focus of the EU is on identifying predictors of disease susceptabilty, and disease progresssion and severity in the major rheumatic disorders.
The EU is also responsible for providing help to other national and international groups in designing conducting and analysing studies which are relevant to its field of expertise. It continues to act as a source of information on the occurrence of rheumatic disease for a wide variety of users.
Following the appointment of Professor Alan Silman as Director in 1989, the emphasis of the unit's work centred on classical epidemiology, with a strong emphasis on understanding the genetic basis for the major arthritic disorders.
