There are more than 100 different types of arthritis and the cause of most of these is unknown. We have grouped the research we fund under some general categories; a full list is available within each category.

Inflammatory arthritis

A broad range of conditions where inflammation plays a significant role in the disease process, including ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

Osteoarthritis

One of the most common forms of arthritis, often known as "degenerative" or "wear and tear" arthritis.

Connective tissue disease

A very large group of diseases causing chronic inflammation including polymyalgia rheumatica, scleroderma and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

Bone disease

Many different conditions affecting bone including osteomalacia, osteoporosis and Paget's disease.

Back and neck pain

Extremely common conditions with many different causes arising from problems affecting the muscles, ligaments, discs, bones and joints of the spine.

Soft tissue disorders

Pain which arises from problems affecting the tendons, ligaments and muscles that surround the joints, including fibromyalgia, fibrositis and tendinitis.

Surgical techniques

Research into all aspects of orthopaedic surgery, including joint replacement, tissue engineering and research on joints.

General research support

Support to underpin clinical and scientific research into many different types of arthritis.
