New book for arthritis sufferers

Consultant rheumatologist Dr Mike Snaith has written "Your Guide to Arthritis", an easy-to-read guide on the symptoms, treatment available, and ultimately how to live with this misunderstood yet common condition. Fifty pence from every book sold will be donated to arc.

The book has an accessible, jargon-free style. “I wanted it to appeal to the intelligent reader, and I felt quite strongly that people with arthritis need to know the facts so they don’t feel they are losing control over what is happening,” said Dr Snaith, a rheumatologist in Derby, and is a former associate editor of the British Journal of Rheumataology.

“People with the condition need reassurance, and I hope the book will provide invaluable advice for people to help them make informed decisions.”

The arthritis guide explains the different types of arthritis, including rheumatoid and osteoarthritis, and related conditions such as lupus, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, ankylosing spondylitis and gout. It also highlights current treatments, and has a section on diet and complementary therapies.

There are also interesting snippets of information, sections on myths and facts, and case studies of patients’ various experiences.

The Royal Society of Medicine: Your Guide to Arthritis is available at the special price of £6.99 (RRP: £9.99) plus 99p postage and packing.
